George was born on the 20^th October 1839, in the village of Fleckney, Leicestershire.

George Loomes (24) and Lucy Sturgess(81) (23) got married at the parish church in the parish of St Mary, Leicester on the 6^th March 1864.
At the time of their marriage both are residing at 39 *Mowbray Street, Leicester.
George’s Profession is Groom.
The occupation of both George’s father George Loomes and Lucy’s father Thomas Sturgess is Labourer.
Down as witnesses are **Edmund Cave and Louisa Loomes, George’s Sister.

 *Mowbary Street I believe use to be located near the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

** Edmund and Louisa married later in the year of 1864.

1.    Charles(82) was born in 1864 on September 10^th, (Leicester 7a 199) and baptised on January 2^nd 1865
Belgrave, Leicester.

2.    Maria E(83) was born in 1866 Mowmacre, Leicester and was batised on 10^th June 1866 Belgrave, Leicester.

In the 1871 census George (31), Lucy (30), Charles (7) and M Elizh (5) are living at Groby Lodge, Ratby, Leicestershire
George is down as being born in Husbands Bosworth, Lucy in Fleckney, Charles in Leicester and M Elizh in Belgrave, Leicestershire.
George’s occupation is Waggoner and Lucy is Dairywoman.

3.    George(84) was born on the 23^rd March 1873, in the village of Fleckney, Leicestershire. His father  George occupation is Waggoner.

4.    Mary Jane(95)....birth was registered Mar 1875 Mt. Harbro.7a 20. She was baptised in the parish church of Fleckney, Leicestershire on the 6^th April 1876, . Her father George occupation is down as a labourer. Mary Jane died in 1876, her death was registered Jun Mt. Harbro. 7a 9.

In the 1881 census George (41), Lucy (39), Charles (16), Maria E (15) and George (8) are living at 55 
Duke Street, Leicester St Mary.
George, Lucy and George are down as being born in Fleckney, Charles in Leicester and Maria E in Mowmacre, Leicestershire.
George’s occupation is General Carter, Charles is Wheelwright and Maria E is Fancy Hosiery Hand.

In the 1891 census George (53) and Lucy (51) along with the children, Maria E (25) George (18) and Grandson Albert S (10 weeks) are living at 39 Myrtle Road, Leicester.
***Albert S is down as being born in Leicester.
George’s occupation is General Carter, Marie E is Dressmaker and George is Boot Packer.

***I came across an Albert Sturgess Loomes(94) in the Death Register who died aged 0 in 1891. (I would have thought Maria E was his Mother?)

In the 1901 census George (61) and Lucy (59) are still living at 39 Myrtle Road, Leicester.
George’s occupation is General Carter and Carting Contractor.

I came across a Lucy Loomes in the Death Register who died in 1909 aged 67 (Jun Leicester 7a 165).

In the 1911 census George (71) and now a widower is still living at 39 Myrtle Road, Leicester.
George’s occupation is Retired Carter.

I came across a George Loomes in the Death Register who died in 1922 aged 82 (Jun Leicester 7a 286).

What Happened to......................?

 1.    Charles.................. m Susan Cooke in Leicester in 1884 (Jun 7a 419)

In the 1891 census Charles (26) and Susan (26) are living at 41 Frank Street, Leicester.
Living with them are they five children Lillian L (6), Charles G (4), Albert A (3) , Walter E (1) and, John W (2 months).
Charles’ occupation is a Railway Drayman.
Everyone is down as being born in Leicestershire.

In the 1901 census Charles (37) and Susan (37) are living at 25 Chestnut Street, Leicester.
Living with them are they eight children Lillian L (16), Charles G (14), Albert A (12) , Walter E (11), John William (10) Sarah E (8) , Margaret L (6) and, Alice E (1).
Also lodging with them is Fanny Summers (51).
Charles’ occupation is a Gas Labourer, son Charles is a Tailor, daughter Lillian is a Hosiery Warehouse Packer and Lodger Fanny is a Seamstress.
Everyone in the family are down as being born in Leicester, except Margaret who was born in Pye Bridge, Derbyshire. Lodger Fanny is from Hull, Yorkshire.

In the 1911 census Charles (46) and Susan (46) are living at 13 Walnut Street, Leicester.
Living with them are they nine children Albert Arthur (23) , Walter Edgar (21), John William (20) Sarah Evelyn (18), Margaret Lucy (16), Alice Elizabeth (11), Susan Dorothy (9), Leonard Leslie (5) and Violet Jessie (3).
Also stopping/living with them is their grandson Horace Isaac (3).
Charles’ occupation is Chemical Foreman, Albert is a Railway Porter, Walter is a Rubber Hand, John is a Boot Repairer, Sarah is a Hosiery Hand and Margaret is a Machinist Ladies Ware..
Susan, Leonard and Violet are down as being born in Leicester, as is grandson Horace.

Charles died in 1935 aged 71 (Dec - Leicester 7a 293)

*Since writing about what happened to Charles I have been contacted by Anthony Burrow who is the great great grandson of Charles and Susan. Anthony told me that Charles and Susan had eleven children and that Susan died in 1937. He also let me have some information on what happened to their children. Click here to read that information.

2.    Maria E.................. m John Robert Dean in Leicester 1902 (Dec 7a 422) ? I could not find Maria and John in the 1911 census or anymore information on them.
