Elizabeth was born on October 13th 1752, Rothwell, Yorkshire. Parents Jonathon (1724-1780) and Mary Smith (1728-1791).

In the 1841 Census Ellis Nutter (50) is living at Bowling Green Terrace, Hunslet, Yorkshire.
He is married to Maria (35) and they have six children living with them, Mary Ann (15), Ellis (14), Maria (9),
John Hayes (5), Richard Hayes (3) and Elizabeth Ann (8 months).
All the family are down as being born in Yorkshire.

I was wondering if Maria’s maiden name was Hayes? because two of the son’s have Hayes as a middle name and it was quite common back then to give children the maiden name of the mother as a middle name.

 8.    James William Henry Nutter.......born July 25th 1843, baptised on September 17th 1843 at St. Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire.

In the 1851 Census Ellis Nutter (60) and Maria (46) are living at 6 Bowling Green Terrace, Hunslet, Yorkshire.
They have five children living with them, Maria (18), John Hayes (15), Richard Hayes (13), Elizabeth Ann (10) and James William (7).
Ellis’s profession is Joiner Greenwich Pensioner and he is down as being born in Rothwell, Yorkshire. Maria is down as being born in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Both John and Richard’s profession are as Mechanics.
All the children are down as being born in Hunslet.

In the 1861 Census Ellis Nutter (70) and Maria (69*) are living at 12 Bowling Green Terrace, Hunslet, Yorkshire.
They have one child living with them, Harry (18).
Ellis’s profession is Model Maker, Harry is Railway Clerk.
Harry** is down as being born in Hunslet.

*I think Maria age should read 54 looking at original census.

**Harry I believe is James, as age (18) and occupation (railway clark) are the same (see James' marriage details below) plus I could not find any information on a Harry Nutter, nor could I find James on any 1861 census.

James William Henry Nutter (19) and Eliza Walton (18) got married at the parish church in the parish of Holbeck, Yorkshire on the 5th July 1862.
At the time of their marriage James is residing in Brewery Filed and Eliza is residing in Holbeck.
James Profession is Railway Clark.
The occupation of James father Ellis Nutter is Joiner, Eliza’s father Richard Walton is out of business.
Down as witnesses are Richard Walton and John Thompson.

In the 1871 Census Ellis Nutter (80) and Maria (66) are living at 12 Bowling Green Terrace, Hunslet, Yorkshire.
Ellis’s profession is Greenwich Pensioner***

*** A Greenwich pensioner is someone who served in the Royal Navy and not as a merchant seaman though he may have done both as he would have been at sea before the concept of continuous service in the navy for seamen.

I have come across records of a Ellis Nutter who died in Sep. 1876 aged 86, Hunslet (9b 183), and a Maria Nutter who died in Mar. 1873 aged 67, Hunslet (9b 200).

1.    Mary Ann.......married Samuel Brown on February 8th 1846, at St. Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fathers are down as Ellis Nutter and Samuel Brown. They had five children Ellen b.1847, Maria Ann b.1850, John b.1852, Maria Ann b.1854 and James b.1857. 

2.    Ellis.......married Sarah Pollard on May 7th 1848, at Holy Trinity, Rothwell, Yorkshire. Fathers are down as Ellis Nutter and Samuel Pollard. They had six children Ellis b.1852, Samuel b.1854, Sarah b.1856, Annie b.1860, Lillie b.1864 and Clara b.1866.                                                                                         Ellis, aged 70 was buried on July 1st 1898, at St James, Manston, Leeds.

4.    Maria Addy.......married Matthew Maxfield in 1855 (Sep. Sheffield 9c 420). They had nine children, Matthew b.1851, Samuel b.1853, Ann b.1854, Fareswell b.1856, Ellen b.1857, Emily b.1860, Thomas b.1865, Clara b.1870 and Bernise b.1875.

5.    John Hayes.......married Elizabeth Green, both aged 18 on January 23rd 1853 at St Peter's, Leeds.  Fathers are down as Ellis Nutter and John Green. They had six children John Ellis b.1854, Elizabeth b.1856, Henry b.1857, Richard b.1860, Frederick William b.1863 and Sarah Emma b.1870.               John Hayes Nutter died in 1906 in the district of Holbeck aged 71. (9b 201).

6.    Richard Hayes.......married Mary Walton on September 8th 1860, both aged 22, at St John the Baptist, Holbeck, Yorkshire. Fathers are down as Ellis Nutter and Richard Walton. Turn’s out that Mary was Eliza’s (James wife) elder sister. 

     In the 1881 Census Richard H Nutter (43) and Mary (42) are living at 23 Hill Street, Holbeck, Yorkshire. Living with them are they six children, Richard W (19), Clara A (17), Thomas A (14), Jennett M (12), Charles E (8) and William H (5).
Also living with them is Mary’s father Richard Walton (77).
Richard’s profession is Inn Keeper (retired), Richard H is Engine Smith, Richard W is Joiner, Clara A is Dressmaker and Thomas A is Errand Boy (Grocers).
Richard H is down as being born in Hunslet, Yorkshire as are his son’s Charles E and William H. (It has not been recorded where the other children were born).

7.    Elizabeth Ann.......aged 24 married Archelaus Hancock on June 4th 1865 at St. James, Sheffield, Yorkshire.

     In the 1871 census Archelaus and Elizabeth are living in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. Living with them are they two children Helena b.1868 and Florence b.1870.

      Elizabeth died in 1872 aged 31

James profession is Master Hedland Ryco. Eliza is down as being born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, and her estimated year of birth is 1845.
John, Mary and Beatrice are down as being born in Holbeck, Yorkshire. George is down as being born in Hunslet.

A round 1876, just after Alice is born the family move up to the district of Carlisle, we know this because George’s death is register in 1876 in the district of Carlisle and a year later Emily is record as being born in the district of Carlisle. They have moved down to Leicester by 1879 as George (2nd) is born in that year in the district of Billesdon.

In the 1881 Census James (38) and Eliza (37) are living at 4 Edwyn St, Leicester St Margaret.
They have seven children living with them, John H R (16), Mary E (15), Beatrice (12), Maria A (8), Alice M (5), Emily F (3) and George H W (1).
James profession is Sack Collector Mid Railway, John H R is Railway Clerk and Mary E is Wool Weaver.
Maria and Alice are down as being born in Leeds, Yorkshire. Emily F is down as being born in Carlisle, Cumberland and George H W is down as being born in Leicester.

Maria Annie Nutter marries George Loomes on February 20th 1897.  

In the 1901 Census James (58) and Eliza (57) are living at 92 Uppingham Rd, Leicester.
They have two children living with them, Alice M (25) and Alfred (19).
James profession is Railway Clerk. Alice profession is Shoe Fitter and Alfred profession is Hair Dresser.
Alice is down as being born in Hunslet, Yorkshire and Alfred is down as being born in Leicester.

I came across an Eliza Nutter who died Sep 1906 in Leicester, aged 62. (7a 132)

In the 1911 Census James (67) is living at 4 Houghton Street, Leicester.
Living with him are his two unmarried daughters, Alice M (35) and Beatrice (42) and grandchild Lucy Loomes (3), Maria Annie and George Loomes daughter.
James profession is retired Railway Clerk. Alice profession is Fitter Shoe Trade and Beatrice is Housekeeper.
Lucy is down as being born in Leicester.

I came across a James William Henry Nutter who died Jun 1915 in Leicester, aged 71. (7a 290)
