William Varnam was born in about 1845 in Leicestershire (1871 census).

William married Emma Roe in 18?? (Emma was born in about 1847)

Children of William and Emma

1.    Betsy…….birth registered in the district of Barrow in 1866 (Dec. 7a 137)

2.    Eliza…….was born on the 14th March 1868 in Stoney Stanton. Her father’s (William) profession is a Stone Cutter. Her mother’s name is Emma formally Roe.

3.    William…….birth registered in the district of Leicester in 1870 (Mar. 7a 173)

In the 1871 Census William (26) and Emma (24) are living on Brittania Street, St Margaret, Leicester.
They have three children living with them, Betsy (4), Eliza (3) and William (1).
Everyone is down as being born in Leicestershire.

4.    John…….birth registered in the district of Leicester in 1873 (Dec. 7a 205)

5.    Joseph…….birth registered in the district of Leicester in 1876 (Mar. 7a 241)

6.    Thomas…….birth registered in the district of Leicester in 1878 (Jun. 7a 239)

7.    George Henry…….birth registered in the district of Leicester in 1880 (Mar. 7a 252)

William I believe died in around 1880.

In the 1881 Census Emma (34) is a widow; she is living at 6, (Palmerston St) Rodney Ter, Leicester St Margaret.
Living with her are six children, Betsy (14), Eliza (13), William (11), John (8), Joseph (5), Thomas (3) and George H (1)

Emma’s Occupation is Factory Hand (Tex), and Betsy is a Warehouse Hand (Fac Lab)
Everyone is down as being born in Leicester.

I can’t find any more records of what happened to Emma.

Eliza Varnam (21) and Harry Royston Draper (24) got married at the parish church in the parish of St. Margaret’s, Leicester on the 10th June 1889.
At the time of their marriage both are residing at 29 Heanor Street, Leicester.

Harry’s occupation is Finisher.
Harry’s father is James Draper and his occupation is Labourer.
Eliza’s father is William Varnam his occupation is Labourer.
Witnesses are James Draper (Harry’s Brother) and Beatrice Susan Draper (Harry’s Sister).

What Happened to the Children of William and Emma

1.    Betsy…….married Reuben Gudger (I have found no information on their marriage). Reuben was born
in abt 1864 (Mar Lutterworth 7a 14).

In the 1891 Census Betsy (24) and Reuben (27) (Gudger splet Goodger) are living at 3 Archdeacon Street, Leicester.
Living with them are their three children, Reuben (4), Susannah (1) and unnamed (0)(Harry Royston)
Reuben’s Occupation is Brickmaker
Betsy is down as being born in Mountsorrel, Reuben and the children are down as being born in Leicester.
Not record on the census was a another son John born 1892

Reuben died in 1894 aged 30 (Sep Leicester 7a 142)

On 21st December, 1895 Betsy Gudger married Edward Holland at St Margarets, Leicester (Dec. 7a 318 Leicester).

In the 1901 Census Betsy (32), down as married and head of the family, is living on Grange Lane, Leicester, Edward had not been record at this address?.
Living with her are her six children, Reuben Gudger (14), Susannah Gudger  (11) and Harry Royston (9) from her first marriage and Edward Holland (4), Rachel Holland (3) and Ernest Holland (1) from her marriage to Edward.
Betsy is down as being born in Mountsorrel, children are down as being born in Leicester.

In the 1911 Census Betsy (45) and Edward (45) are living at 56 Grange Lane, Leicester.
Living with them are their eight children, (all have the surname down as Holland), Reuben (24), John (20), Harry Royston (19), Edward (15), Rachel (14), Ernest (11), Jack (8) and Jennie (7). (It's recorded that their had two children who had died).
Betsy is down as being born in Mountsorrel, Edward and the children are down as being born in Leicester.
Edward’s Occupation is Corporation Labourer as is his son John, Reuben’s Occupation is Bose Hand, Harry is a Labourer and Edward is a Printer Labourer.
